Schubert chokecherry’s attractive pyramidal shape and purple foliage make it a popular specimen tree. Showy light pink flowers appear in spring, followed by deep purple-black fruit. Immature foliage is green but quickly turns a vibrant red-purple that lasts all summer.
Schubert chokecherries are adaptable to a wide variety of soil types. Birds are highly attracted to the fruit, and it is edible to humans, although so astringent it is best suited for mixed fruit jams and jellies. Schubert chokecherries are prone to suckering and will require annual removal of unwanted shoots. Susceptible to black knot.
